Tasco Telescope
Explained how they deceive the new astronomer.
Tasco Telescope also known as department store telescopes are misleading. If you already own a Tasco Telescope all is not lost. I will tell you how to fix them up with a few things like a different telescope eyepiece.
Tasco telescopes advertise their scopes by listing outrages magnifications on the box like 624X which is the telescopes eyepiece. Tasco is most likely aiming for that the average new astronomer doesn’t know is that a telescope’s power isn’t just measured like that. It’s the diameter of the mirror or objective that mainly determines the telescopes power.
Tasco telescopes come with the worse quality telescope eyepieces I have seen. Most of them come with the Huygens “H” optical type eyepieces These are extremely cheap to manufacture and have a very narrow field of view. This is horrible for the beginner because of how hard it is to locate anything with such a view. You will see Tosco scopes come with eyepieces like h20mm SR4mm etc.. Now with eyepieces what you should know is the lower the number the higher the magnification, which isn’t always better.
As stated earlier Tasco telescopes are mostly sold in department stores and toy stores. Telescope for sale there are usually the lowest quality you can find. Tasco telescopes are mostly plastic and I wouldn’t be surprised if the mirrors are some sort of plastic too. If you compare a Meade telescope to a Tasco telescope of the same price, take a look at what eyepieces they come with and stay away from anything that comes with a H20, H12.5 and SR4mm eyepiece set. I learned that the hard way.
For those who already have a Tasco telescope there are a few things you can do to fix it up. The telescopes eyepiece is the primary reason they perform so badly. What you first need to do is figure out what the stats on your telescope are ex: D=60, F=700mm. The D stands for diameter and the F stands for focal ratio. Now figure out if your telescope has a 9.65” or 1.25” eyepiece barrel. Just use a ruler to determine this
