Refracting telescopes
meade DS90EC is a computerized and a go to telescope.
As with all refracting telescopes I recommend picking up a few telescope accessories 3 plossl eyepieces of different powers and a good Barlow lens.
The DS90EC is fairly well priced for the quality. It is a entry level to intermediate meade telescope. The meade DS90EC telescope’s focuser is a plastic unit which is pretty smooth tracking . The DS90EC has quite a lot of plastic on it. The plastic is unusual but seems to be high quality and I haven’t had a problem with it. The alt/az mount is also plastic and also incorporates hook-ups for the computer controls and connections for the electric motors. The hand held unit that controls the Meade refracting telescopes has 4 different speed available to slue the Meade telescope. With the optional focusing motor the hand held unit can also control that feature.
The tripod seems to be flimsy doesn’t absorb enough vibration for refracting telescopes. It may be ok if you just move it from inside your house to outside. The whole setup is pretty light. But also makes it bad in medium winds which cause a lot of vibration.
Documentation is straight forwards and complete. You have to train the electric motor before you first use it. Its relatively simple. Observing setup and alignment takes a couple minuets. The auto star computer has simple instruction and you get used to the controls fairly quickly.
For a refracting telescope there is not much absence of false color. I recommend buying some telescope accessories like a possl eyepiece and a meade Barlow. If you read any other reviews you will have probably heard the standard 9mm telescope eyepiece is horrible with such a small exit pupil and lack of eye relief.
Bottom line. It is a good refracting telescope for a low budget. most meade telescopes generally have good telescope accessories you can buy later this one is no exception.
