Barlow lens
A barlow lens is a diverging (negative) lens which is between the objective lens. Because it increases the effective focal length of the objective lens it in turn increasing the magnification.
There are many advantages to a barlow lens. The only disadvantage is a small loss of light throughput.
· Achieves a higher magnification with a longer focal-length eyepiece.
· Barlow increases the effective focal ratio of the objective. Giving a more finely tuned light cone.
· Greater eye relief. Eye relief is the distance between your eye and the eyepiece lens when the lens is in focus.
This diagram shows how they work.

Meade and Orion are a good place to look if you are in the market in buying a new eyepiece.
